Worship

Sunday Mornings at 10 am

The central event of our week is worship. The chief aim of our worship is to glorify God.  The Preaching of the Word, the public reading of Scripture, Hymns of Praise, sharing of the Sacraments, the prayers of God’s people, and the Stewardship of the congregation make up our joyful worship experience.

Liturgical Worship

Highlands enjoys a varied and rich life of worship. We are a ‘liturgical’ church, which means we observe the ‘seasons’ of the church year including Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. During the church year, there are also many occasions of celebration and opportunities for additional services of worship. We have three services on Christmas Eve.  Our Holy Week services include Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunrise Services.
We celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of each month and on other special occasions. The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated as need and the occasion arises. Both Communion and Baptism are integral and important aspects of our Worship.

Children and Worship

We believe that children have a place in worship. We also believe in allowing children to progress in their understanding of what we do in worship according to their development. We provide a nursery experience for very young children. Children from ages 3 through 1st grade are invited to come to the first portion of worship in the Sanctuary. After “A Time With The Young Church,” these children are able to attend “Children’s Church,” which is a worshipful experience designed for this age level. (Children’s Church does not meet on Communion Sundays or JOY Sundays.)

Older children will find that worship at Highlands is inclusive of all ages.  You can find Worship Bags hanging in the back of the Sanctuary, as well as Children's Bulletins and liturgical coloring sheets. We hope that all children will participate in worship in a way that feels meaningful and joyful to them.
